Jonathan Jones, Slidell, LA

This 8 point was killed in November 2007 on public land in the National Red Dirt WMA Preserve in the Kisatchie National Forest located in Natchitoches Parish Louisiana. The inside spread measured 20 1/4 inches and it weighed in at 160 pounds live weight. It was aged at 3 1/2 years old. It was a cold early morning; I was hunting just standing on the ground behind a tree for around 30 minutes. I saw movement deep in the woods at an estimated 100 yards. I knew instantly it was a deer and did not notice the rack on it. He was just walking through the woods on a mission. I threw up my rifle (Remington 742 30-06) found him in my scope and saw a clear shot through the woods and fired off a round. It started running towards me and this was the first time I saw his rack. I was looking for and another shot to take while he was running at me, but it was not needed. He fell dead about 15 yards in front of me. This whole story probably took place in less than 30 seconds and it is all I can remember. As you probably know, deer of this size are hard to come by on public land especially in Louisiana.
